Scary Halloween Recipes and Party Drinks
If you want to make your Halloween party truly sizzle, it’s not just the decorations, lighting and fancy dress you need to consider. You should also think about the snacks and drinks you’ll present to your guests. The snacks and drinks here were all tried and tested at a recent party thrown by the Halloween costumes team (www.escapade.co.uk), and all proved to be tasty treats after tricking the guests…
Finger Food
Eyeballs on a Plate
Peel and halve boiled eggs. Remove the yolks and combine with mayonnaise until you have a smooth filling. Fill each egg white with a mound of the yolk mixture. Top with a sliced black olive to look like a pupil.
Pizza Fingers
Use a square margherita pizza and cut into finger shapes. Make a nail from a carved bell pepper. Serve with artfully arranged splodges of ‘blood’, using tomato relish or ketchup. Alternatively, you can bake savoury witches’ fingers biscuits.

Shaped Sandwiches
With a food cutter any sandwich can be shaped into bats, ghosts (really effective if using white bread), scary castles, or even pumpkins. If you don’t have a cutter, why not make bone- or coffin-shaped sandwiches, using just a knife and your own creativity?
Bloody Brains in a Skull
Bake a potato and cut it in half lengthways, scooping out its innards to leave a skull shell. Fill this with carefully piled cooked spaghetti, which can be topped with a blood-red pasta sauce.
Bugs on Crackers
Colour cream cheese with green food colouring and lay a round slice of gherkin on a round cracker. Give the bug’s body definition by placing a dollop of green cream cheese on the gherkin slice. Add wings by using sliced almonds and use small pieces of olive for eyes. Place finished crackers on a bed of cress to look like grass.
Sweet Treats
Fruit Flies
Halve a pear lengthways and core it. Cut a small wedge into each side and place a wedge of orange in each to look like wings. Poke some liquorice laces into the top for your fly’s antennae.
Chilling Drinks

Black Martini
As black is the colour of Halloween, this is one of the best cocktails for a Halloween party. This Black Martini replaces vermouth with either a blackberry brandy or a black raspberry liqueur (such as Chambord). Take 3½ ounces of gin and mix with ½ ounce of blackberry brandy or black raspberry liqueur in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Serve this with a chill – on the rocks with a lemon garnish. The drink will be dark but not black-black, so another option is to make a Vodka Martini with Blavod, a black-coloured vodka.
Blood-dripping Lime Chillers
This non-alcoholic cocktail will really chill your guests! Take a ¼ cup of honey and combine it with your red food colouring in a shallow bowl. Grab your 10 wine goblets and dip the rims into the red mixture, one at a time, coating all rims. Turn the wine goblets upright and let the blood ooze down the sides. Mix 4 cups of chilled pineapple juice, 3 cups of ginger ale and 6 ounces of frozen limeade concentrate in a punch bowl. Fill each blood-dripping wine goblet with your lime chiller and enjoy!
